In Thailand you typically don't wear your shoes inside. You take them off and leave them outside before entering a place.
It is because of this that I lost my shoes to begin with. They had been left outside my house and eventually "walked away". But it's also because of this that I found them again. I found them kicked off outside of a doorway this afternoon.
