Icky Decorations.

I'm not really a fan of Halloween. Never really have been. This is for a great variety of reasons that range from silly to serious. I've written about some of my more serious reasons before, and you can check them out here if you'd like.

But for now, I will share my current thought on Halloween. I think the decorations are creepy and icky! Seriously... I spend a lot of time trying to make my home a lovely, comfortable place to live. Why on earth would someone want to decorate it with spiders, skulls, blood, and deadness? Gross!

My next door neighbors have a few Halloween decorations up. Thankfully nothing too terrible. But I do have this guy peeking in my kitchen window at me.

What's worse than having a peeping Tom? a DEAD peeping Tom! I think I'm actually going to look forward to when Christmas decorations go up. Christmas decorations may be tacky, but at least they're not dead and gross.

Ps. Funny story... I was curious about where the term "Peeping Tom" came from. According to Wikipedia... he died for his peeping. So it kind of makes sense now to have a dead peeping Tom.

That doesn't mean I want him around.

Go Figure.

Oh, Halloween... It came and went.

I was a Canadian.

Canadians don't look much different than Americans, so that should give you a hint about my costume.

My students were ghosts, and devils, and witches, and monsters... and buzz lightyear.

One of my students was crying today. I found out that all the other kids were saying that she was possessed by a ghost. In light of my last post... Go figure.

It breaks my heart.

I have one little girl in my class though, who is the most precious thing in the world. She is hear with her mom and dad as missionaries from Korea. She wore a white dress with dainty white gloves. She told me it was because she was a "Beloved princess of God".

Darkness.

I don't think i've ever experienced darkness like i have since being here.

Sure, I live in a city, and so physically it is never dark. But Spiritually is another story.

Halloween is coming up this week. Growing up, my family didn't usually do anything for the holiday. We didn't trick-or-treat, or throw parties, or do anything related. Sure I was a little bit disappointed back then, but today i don't have much interest in celebrating. At the same time it's all in fun, and if I had to I wouldn't mind it that much. Most likely when I have kids i'll be taking them trick-or-treating.

Part of me is agreeing to dress up with my students on Wednesday. But honestly, I don't want anything to do with Halloween right now. Back in the states it's fine, but here is another story. Like i said, I had never really seen darkness until i came here.

My students see ghosts on the playground. There is spirit-worship and idol worship everywhere i look. Prostitution is huge. Transvestitism is accepted as normal. Wickedness is reveled in. The darkness is thicker than the smoggy streets, and they're so smoggy that I'm starting to sound like an old woman.

This year, where I am, I want nothing to do with Halloween. It's not so much fun and games here.
